Do you ever cool down? Want to know why it’s important? Want to know how to cool down properly? Here are your answers …
A cool down is just as important as a warm up. Cooling down is gradually slowing down your level activity and returning your body to its pre exercise state. A cool down will help to assist in recovery and bring your heart and breath rate down and will also prevent dizziness. If you don’t cool down properly you may experience delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). This normally happens either the next day or the day after that – this can be from a good workout or from not having a proper cool down. The effects of an inappropriate cool down include symptoms of dizziness, nausea and a ‘worn out’ feeling.
There are 3 elements to cooling down which are all equally important. The first is gentle exercise, then stretching, then refuel.
The first stage is only five to ten minutes of gentle exercise, this can be the same exercise that you were doing. For example if you are jogging, slow it down to a brisk walk and then to a slower walk. You will then need to stretch all of your major muscle groups espcially the ones you have been working and hold them for about 20 seconds.
Lastly, refuel, you need nourishment after your exercise so replenish your body with water, minerals and carbohydrates for energy.
