A healthy thyroid gland is crucial for the smooth running of every cell in the body. The thyroid’s job is to produce thyroid hormones which control our metabolism- the speed of activity in our cells. If it produces too much of the hormones, the cells work too fast, and if it doesn’t produce enough, cells work too slowly.
A healthy diet can help to keep your thyroid healthy, with specific nutrients key to thyroid health.
Worldwide, iodine deficiency is the most common cause of preventable brain damage, and can also cause miscarriage and premature birth, caused by lack of thyroid hormones. Most iodine in our diets comes from fish, especially shellfish, and dairy produce. Sea kelp is a rich source of iodine.
The recommended intake for adults of iodine is 150mcg per day, with too much having a negative effect on the thyroid gland.
Like iodine, selenium found in poultry, fish, nuts (especially brazil nuts) mushrooms, and eggs are important for making thyroid hormones. Selenium also acts as an antioxidant and may help to prevent cancer.
